• W101394758 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses some electrophysiological studies on radiation-induced changes in the adult nervous system. It focuses on acute radiation effects on the adult nervous system and the functional changes that are electrophysiologically demonstrable during exposure to ionizing radiation. The chapter presents some neurophysiological bases for the change in neuronal excitability underlying the integrated response of the nervous system. It describes behavioral and morphological changes and focuses on changes in behavior following irradiation of the brain and histological changes in the nervous system. X-irradiation of the brains of mammals with doses of 500 to 3000 R is generally characterized by a diphasic change in the function of the central nervous system. An initial excitatory or hyperactive period is followed by depression or degeneration, although a few exceptions to this pattern occur in certain species that are extraordinarily hypersensitive to ionizing radiation. There is an interesting and sensitive behavioral reaction that results from exposure to ionizing radiation. This is the so-called radiation-conditioned saccharin aversion reflex. The chapter reviews physiological changes in the nervous system induced by ionizing radiation. Unlike the central nervous system, peripheral nerve fibers are very resistant to ionizing radiation." @default.
