- W1488472591 abstract "Evaluating personal development as ‘successful’ presupposes the existence of normative criteria for measuring such ‘success.’ By contrast, psychological theories, like any other scientific theories, are constrained by the limits of what empirical data and their underlying concepts can provide. It is impossible to deduce norms or values solely from observed facts. However, although facts by themselves do not form a sufficient basis for legitimate evaluations and norms, they are nevertheless a necessary component. Accordingly, this chapter discusses psychological concepts that empirically describe and theoretically explain the courses and outcomes of human development. In particular, the concepts of plasticity, resilience, personal well-being, psychological health, the stability of personal identity, individual capacity to act, and social integration will be examined. These concepts and the resulting psychological model of successful development will be explained by focusing on two topics as examples, i.e., the dynamics of coping with delinquency at a juvenile age, and resilience in the face of crises and loss in old age." @default.
