This chapter introduces three important concepts in thermodynamics: temperature, heat, and work. The heat change that occurs is proportional to the temperature difference between the initial and final states of the system. The chapter presents a simple example of how energy and enthalpy can be calculated. It then provides a brief introduction to calorimetry, an area of science concerned with the measurement of heat changes associated with chemical reactions.
