Shallowgeothermal systems for indirect use as well as shallowgeothermal heat storage systems like aquifer thermalenergy storage (ATES) or borehole thermal energystorage (BTES) typically provide low exergy heat.The temperature levels and ranges typically require acoupling with heat pumps.By storing hot water from solar panels or thermalpower stations with temperatures of up to 110 °C amedium deep high temperature heat storage (MDHTS)can be operated on high temperature levels which arecharacterized by 50 °C to 110 °C. Therefore, heatpumps are not necessary and low temperature spaceheating systems are not mandatory because MDHTScan be operated in conjunction with classical radiatorbased high temperature heating systems. Furthermore,storage depths of 500 m to 1,500 m below surfaceavoid conflicts with groundwater use for drinkingwater or other purposes. Additionally, the temperaturedifference between the storage system and thesurrounding rocks becomes smaller with increasingdepth resulting in a decrease of thermal losses.Permeability is typically also decreasing with greaterdepth, especially in the crystalline basement thereforeconduction becomes the dominant heat transportprocess. Solar-thermal charging of a MDHTS is a verybeneficial option for supplying heat in urban and ruralsystems.Feasibility and design criteria of different systemconfigurations are discussed. One system is designedto store and supply heat (300 kW) for an officebuilding. The required boreholes are located ingranodioritic bedrock. Resulting from this setupseveral challenges have to be addressed. The drillingand completion has to be planned carefully underconsideration of the geological and tectonical situationat the specific site. In addition to the MDHTS systemthe results of this drill site will help to characterizepotential target horizons for petrothermal systems(Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS)) in the nearbyUpper Rhine Graben where several deep geothermalprojects are already in operation and new ones areplanned which target the same geological formationslike the one discussed here." @default.
