- W176131000 abstract "The debate about incommensurability is a debate about whether succesive scientific conceptualizations of a given domain are related to each other, and if so, how. This paper provides an account of concepts and concept generating mechanisms that allow for conceptual changes that have a continuous but not simply cumulative character. The account is cognitive-historical in that it draws both on investigations from the cognitive sciences on how human reason and represent concepts, generally, and on fine-grained historical investigations of cognitive practices employed in science. It shows that scientific concepts can be represented in frame-like structures, dynamic frame and meaning schema, and that with this kind of analysis continuity between the different stages of conceptual change can readily be followed and that mechanisms for conceptual change through anomaly resolution can be specified. Further, cognitive-historical analysis of concept constructive practices establishes the role of abstraction via generic modeling as providing continuity through radical conceptual change" @default.
