- W1966542423 abstract "Abstract Results using a technique for the study of contact area and surface microtopography by means of friction measurements are described. A range of measurements for a variety of abraded surfaces has been obtained by sliding silicone rubber replicas of the surfaces against a smooth, relatively hard surface of polytetrafluorethylene at different normal loads. A unique feature of the technique as compared with other methods of surface examination is that it gives information as to contact area which in turn depends on average asperity shape and degree of coplanarity. This information is complementary to that given by the stylus method of surface examination which usually measures the arithmetic average value of the departure of the surface profile from its centre line (c.l.a. in μ in.) i.e. asperity size rather than shape. An advantage over other methods is in the relatively large area (about 1 cm 2 ) studied which means that a statistically large sample in terms of asperity numbers is involved in the results. Surfaces may be studied which are too soft for the stylus method to be used or too rough for the use of the interference microscope." @default.
