- W2005349685 abstract "Groundwater pollution in agricultural areas as a result of the excessive use of fertilizers and herbicides has been a major concern in industrialized countries. This study was conducted to investigate the movement of atrazine through the soil profile, in two different but representative soils of the Sorraia Valley region, Portugal: silty loam and sandy soils. Results from field studies were used to calibrate and evaluate the hydrological and pesticide components of the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM), under irrigated conditions. The RZWQM is effective in simulating plant growth of the maize crop. For both soil types (silty loam and sandy soils) model predictions on soil water content were in agreement with the observed values. During the calibration year, for most of the irrigation events, model predictions of atrazine concentrations were in the same range as the observations. These results indicate that RZWQM can be used, when properly calibrated to simulate the movement of water and atrazine through the soil profile, for Portuguese conditions. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. La contamination des eaux souterraines par des engrais et herbicides utilisés en agriculture est un problème majeur dans les pays industrialisés. Cette étude a été conduite pour mieux comprendre le mouvement de l'atrazine à travers du profil du sol. Deux types de sols de la Vallée du Sorraia, Portugal, ont été utilisés: un sol limoneux-argileux et un sol sablonneux. Les observations de terrain ont été utilisées pour calibrer et évaluer les composantes de simulation de l'eau du sol et de pesticides du logiciel RZWQM. Ce modèle s'est montré capable de simuler tant les variables de croissance et de production du maïs irrigué que les profiles d'humidité du sol. De même, pour la grande majorité des evènements d'arrosage, les résultats de la simulation des concentrations d'atrazine dans le profil du sol sont dans le même ordre de grandeur que ceux des observations. Il est donc possible de conclure que le logiciel RZWQM peut être utilisé pour simuler le transport d'atrazine dans le sol pour les conditions portugaises une fois dûment calibré.
