- W201021470 abstract "Socially controlled sex change in fishes represents an extreme, but useful example of the very general phenomenon of environmental control of reproductive development and function. Studies of sex change to date strongly implicate components of the reproductive axis at the level of the gonad and brain, with estrogen signaling mediated by the enzyme aromatase appearing to be of particular importance. The hormone arginine vasotocin and monoamine neurotransmitters also appear to play critical roles in behavioral sex change. While many aspects of this fascinating process remain poorly understood with detailed, plausible models yet to be put forward, rapid technical advances in teleost endocrinology and the continued development of powerful models for study suggest that our understanding of this fascinating reproductive pattern should improve rapidly." @default.
