- W2022497102 abstract "Abstract 1. 1. An enzymic extract was prepared from culture supernatants of soil bacterium and the general properties of the enzymic extract were studied. 2. 2. The specificity of the enzymic extract towards several galactans and other polysaccharides has been determined and it was found that the extract had a high specificity for polysaccharides containing 3,6-anhydro- l -galactose, suggesting that the enzymic extract recognizes this sugar in polysaccharides. 3. 3. The action of the enzyme on agarose gives a series of homologous neoagarosaccharides beginning with neoagarobiose and finishing with a probable octadecasaccharide. The structures of these reaction products strongly suggest that the enzymic system splits the β (1–4) linkages of the agarose. 4. 4. It was found that the enzymic extract apparently catalyses hydrolytic reactions only. 5. 5. It is suggested that a new general use for the term “agarolysis” be applied and that its present utilization be replaced by more specific terms." @default.
