Glutamate-induced discharges of neurons in long-isolated (8–48 weeks) slabs of suprasylvian cortex in cats were inhibited by stimulation of the cortical surface. The inhibitory pause was longer than normal, but the threshold stimulus was not significantly altered. 2. 2. Membrane potentials could be recorded only transiently in slabs; although inhibitory post-synaptic potentials were readily evoked by surface stimulation, there was some indication of a reduced inhibitory conductance change. 3. 3. It was concluded that the normal inhibitory mechanisms are substantially preserved in long-isolated slabs and that the tendency to seizure discharges cannot be ascribed to total loss of inhibitory control. 4. 4. Neuroglia were particularly numerous in long-isolated slabs; they had a high resting potential and did not respond to low frequency stimulation, but they were depolarized by repetitive stimulation at a high frequency (100 c/sec). 5. 5. During paroxysmal seizures, unit spikes were not discernible, and unit discharges could not be clearly evoked by l -glutamate or inhibited by γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) applied by micro-iontophoresis. Such applications do not affect the seizure. 6. 6. Although intravenous injections of GABA can stop a seizure, there is no clear evidence that the permeability of the blood-brain barrier is greatly enhanced in slabs." @default.
