- W2047113212 abstract "Abstract Micropaleontological data have been analyzed through mathematical and statistical procedures in order to establish the distribution pattern of radiolarian assemblages in the surface sediments and to establish the relationship of these assemblages with oceanographic variables. Factor analysis shows that five major radiolarian assemblages (factors), accounting for 93.6% of the variance, reflect the mixed-layer circulation and its associated water masses. According to their position in the area, these factors are called: (1) the Subtropical factor, (2) the Equatorial (undercurrent) factor, (3) the Peru (current) factor, (4) the Chile (current) factor, and (5) the Backwater factor. The Subtropical factor covers the largest area, is correlated with the warm waters of the South Equatorial Current, and almost completely overlaps the Equatorial factor. The Equatorial factor is correlated with the production of biogenic silica and shows its clearest dominance close to the Galapagos Islands, where the Equatorial Undercurrent nears the surface. The Peru factor separates the Subtropical factor from the coast and shows the influence of coastal upwelling in the Peru Current. The Chile factor follows the cool water of the Chile Current, along the Chilean coast, and goes off to the west at about 23°S, where the Subtropical Convergence vanishes. The Backwater factor appears between the Peru factor and the Chile factor, in an area of intense mixing of water masses. Taxonomic notes are given in the appendix." @default.
