- W2053468236 abstract "The concept of the minimal perfect absorber is developed, a theoretical artifice which simplifies the use of quantum absorber theory in treating practical problems in non-relativistic atomic physics. In particular it enables quantum absorber theory in a purely semiclassical form to be used to study the recently-detected dynamic Stark effect, an effect which is currently believed to be a manifestation of vacuum fluctuations and to provide evidence for the need for field quantization. It is shown that absorber theory, without any field quantization, also predicts this effect and it is thus concluded that the effect is not necessarily a test of conventional quantum electrodynamics, and does not imply the need for field quantization. The work in this paper lends support to the suggestion of Hoyle and Narlikar [Ann. Phys. N. Y., 54 (1969)] that the quantized field is merely an illusion, with quantization being required for the atoms only. A simple entity which produces the illusion of the vacuum field appears to be the minimal perfect absorber." @default.
