- W2070580824 abstract "I t is generally known in musical circles that Eduard Hanslick was skeptical of the claim that music has anything to do with expressing the emotions: that he believed, in a word, music doesn't do it. But problems surface as soon as one tries to spell out the skeptical view in any detail, which is to say, to unpack the concept of expression, and to pin down exactly what Hanslick is denying (and why) when he denies the concept to music. Hanslick refers to his denial (of whatever it is he is denying) as the negative thesis. My object 3 in the present essay, simply stated, will be to spell out as precisely as I can (given the sketchy character of Hanslick's little book) just what the negative thesis is (and isn't). And I will rely, for the most part, in this re-examination of the negative thesis, on Geoffrey Payzant's excellent new translation of Vom Musikalisch-Schonen (which he renders On the Musically Beautiful). It has, in fact, inspired my renewed interest in what Hanslick was really up to. Only one thing about the negative thesis seems absolutely clear and beyond dispute: Hanslick was denying that music is essentially an expression of the emotions; denying that music is beautiful or valuable to the extent that it successfully expresses the emotions and lacking beauty or value to the extent that it fails. Payzant thinks that this is all that Hanslick was doing: that this is the sum total of the negative thesis. In his view Hanslick is not denying that music can, for example, arouse or portray human emotions. He merely says that to do so is not the defining purpose of music.' It is my view, on the other hand, that Hanslick went far beyond this in the negative thesis: that he in fact denied music can arouse or portray or in any other way embody what I shall henceforth call the garden-variety emotions, such as" @default.
