• W2181591343 abstract "Recent evidence indicates that walking is much more dangerous than motoring (i.e., being occupants of passenger cars) in the U.S. This evidence is based on the traditional method of risk measurement that limits injury outcomes to fatalities and measures exposure with distance traveled or trips made. This paper proposes a new method of risk measurement to reassess the relative injury risks between walking and motoring (i.e., being an occupant of a passenger car) in the U.S. The proposed method measures exposure with time traveled and more importantly integrates injuries of different severity on the KABCO scale using corresponding unit costs. This method is applied to the U.S. in 2001. Walking is considerably less dangerous than motoring if only non-fatal injuries are considered, but is more dangerous when only fatal injuries are considered.
