- W2316684021 abstract "The first significant U.S. patent in the field of high-temperature superconductivity will be issued to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a process that yields a superconducting ceramic/metal composite. Such composites appear to show more promise for some commercial applications, than superconducting ceramics by themselves. MIT says the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office has issued it a notice of allowability, which indicates that a patent is forthcoming, probably within two or three months. The patent covers a process invented by John B. Vander Sande and Gregory J. Yurek of MIT's Department of Materials Science & Engineering. The process combines the metallic components of a ceramic superconductor (for example, yttrium, barium, and copper) with a noble metal such as silver or gold. Heating this precursor alloy in oxygen converts it into a composite of a superconducting oxide (yttrium barium copper oxide in this case) and the noble metal, which is not oxidized. The composite can be made into ..." @default.
