- W2552593852 abstract "Interactions between common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and artisanal fisheries were studied a) monitoring dolphin presence at night by means of an Ecological Acoustic Recorder (ad hoc modified EAR) and b) identifying depredation by specific net damage. Damage resulted in 4 of 34 fishing operations with both loss and increments of single fished species. The overall effect of depredation was 14% loss of the commercial catch. Introduction - Despite the fact that possible interactions between common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus Montagu, 1821) feeding strategies and artisanal fisheries are widely reported, it is not completely clear what interaction really means and which damage is definitely due to dolphin depredation. First observations carried out for an on-going study in the Ligurian Sea are here described: the study includes on board monitoring of the net conditions before and after each fishing operation and the collection of acoustic data during the night. While a Mod EAR replaces cetacean observation from the boat, depredations are documented by specific damage observed on the net. In this note fishing results are presented. Materials and methods - 34 fishing operations carried out between 16/04 and 15/09 2010 in the coastal waters near Chiavari were studied: 7 were carried out using trammel nets on a muddy bottom at 10-30 meters depth, and 27 using gill nets on a muddy bottom at 30-50 meters depth. The nets were equipped with Mod EAR and were immersed for approximately 12 hours, from 7 pm to 7 am (Fossa et al., 2011). Catch was sorted per species and counted as number of individuals. Interactions were recorded by specific net damage consisting in holes with a hanging strip of net: this kind of damage is assigned to dolphins by local fishermen (cfr. Zahri et al., 2004). Total catches in presence and absence of depredation are shown in terms of mean number of fish species per fishing operation (Net features: mesh N°10, length = approx. 700 meters, height = 3 meters). The fisherman used more than 1 net per night, but only the first fishing operation could be monitored. Economic loss calculations were not included in this note. Results and conclusions - Over 34 fishing operations, net damage was observed in 4 cases (11.8% of the total). Trammel net catch composition in spring on a 15-25 meters deep muddy bottom was made up of (in decreasing number of individuals): Mullus spp., Aspitrigla cuculus, Oblada melanura, Boops boops, Diplodus spp., Sepia officinalis, Eledone moschata, Octopus vulgaris and a group of less frequent species. In one fishing operation, among those described above, little damage was observed" @default.
