- W2563359780 abstract "Antibiotic-resistant, gram-negative bacteria are a global challenge, with a major concern being widespread resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. The variety of such drugs is impressive, yet their availability for clinical use is dwindling because of expanding resistance. Two main strategies help to curb the development of antibiotic resistance, and they are not mutually exclusive. One strategy is to develop new antibacterial agents and drug combinations faster than resistance develops. However, we have already failed to make this strategy work for gram-negative infections. The second, but often overlooked, strategy is to develop technology to enable rapid surveillance of resistant pathogens in hospital and community settings. Rapidly detecting and identifying resistance in turn could enable us to use antibiotics more judiciously and thus minimize development of further resistance." @default.
