- W2567386718 abstract "IntroductionYoung adults often forgo routine health care (1). This can be problematic, because they often engage in risky behaviors, like substance abuse (2). Young adults who see their doctor regularly are more likely to receive help when they need it. Also, one's regular physician can be a resource for advising young adults about risky behaviors (3). This study examined factors associated with young adults' tendency to see a doctor regularly or ignore their symptoms.Several factors may predict a tendency for young adults to see their physician for regular checkups. Studies examining sex of the young patient and checkups have reported equivocal results. Some have found that females may see doctors more frequently than males (4), whereas others reported that males seek medical care more often than females (5). Young adults who visit their physician independently (i.e., are not accompanied by parents or friends) may be more likely to seek routine medical care (6). Having a chronic illness may be related to seeing one's doctor regularly (5). Age may influence tendencies to visit a doctor. Specifically, college age youth may visit their physician more than high school students (7). For this study, a logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relations among the aforementioned factors and making routine physician visits.A number of factors may also be associated with a tendency to ignore medical symptoms. For example, males may ignore symptoms more often than females (8). Young adults who take over-the-counter (OTC) medications may ignore symptoms if they persist, because they have treated the problem on their own (9). Having a chronic medical problem (5) or going to appointments with friends or parents (10) may reduce tendencies to ignore symptoms. This study investigated the factors related to ignoring symptoms using a second logistic regression analysis.MethodsThis study was part of a larger project examining young adults' health care attitudes (11). The sample included 484 females and 392 males between 14 and 27 years of age (M = 17 years, SD = 2 years). Participants were recruited from a university and four high schools in the Midwest. Eighty-six percent were Caucasian, 7% were African American, and 7% were Indian, Asian or Hispanic. A university-based institutional review board approved this study. Participants older than 18 years of age completed consent forms. Younger participants provided their assent and returned consent forms signed by guardians.ProceduresParticipants completed a survey to record demographic information and perceptions of their health care by providing responses to a series of multiple choice and yes or no questions.1 Examples of questions include whether participants saw a physician for regular checkups, who accompanied them to checkups, characteristics valued in a physician, whether they ignored symptoms, and whether they purchased OTC medications to treat symptoms. Surveys were administered in small groups and it took 20 minutes to complete the survey.ResultsFifty-eight percent saw a physician regularly, while 38% reported they tended to ignore symptoms. About a quarter of the sample had chronic medical problems, and 84% purchased OTC medications to treat symptoms. Most (95%) valued a caring attitude as a key characteristic of a good physician. About half (51%) went to see their doctor with their parents or friends, while 28% went to their checkups alone.A logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relations among gender, physician attitude, medical problems, whether participants visited the physician alone, age, and regular checkups. An older and a younger age group were created using the median age (18 years). The comparison group was those who did not go for regular checkups. The model was significant, X2 (5, 866) = 47.31, p" @default.
