- W2596494883 abstract "Laser surface alloying of aluminium AA 1200 with a self-fluxing nickel alloy powder and with an iron-based alloy powder was investigated. The purpose of the investigation was to form crack- and pore-free thin layers on the near surface of the aluminium substrate in order to increase wear resistance. The alloying was carried out by depositing the powders separately on the target substrate followed by depositing mixtures of powders in specific weight ratios. A Rofin 4.4 kW Nd: YAG laser was used for surface alloying. The critical processing parameters are the laser power, travel speed, beam spot size; powder feed rate and the shielding gas. The processed thin layers were further investigated by optical and scanning electron microscope for cracks and pores. The results showed that when alloying with nickel powder alone, crack-free layers were formed on the substrate penetrating as much as 2 mm, whereas when alloying with iron-based powder alone, the thin layers showed cracks at the heat-affected zones. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) method was used to analyse the intermetallic phases formed in the alloyed zone. The results showed thin layers consisting of various intermetallic phases consisting of Ni3AI, NiAI, FeAI and Fe3AI. The hardness of the layers were 3 to 4 times that of the base material. The layers also showed some brittleness as they tended to crack when subjected to the diamond tip of the indenter." @default.
