- W2725111991 abstract "This chapter discusses the transformation of agriculture, in Scotland. Industrialisation and agricultural transformation in Scotland were two sides of the same coin. So closely connected were the two movements that unravelling the complex texture of inter-relationships is a challenging task. On the one hand, the remarkable rise of industrial and urban employments in the eighteenth century created a much enlarged market of non-food producers, which in turn generated a massive new demand for the produce of Scottish farms. It was this factor above all else which provided the crucial incentive for investment and innovation in the new husbandry from the middle decades of the eighteenth century. Equally, however, agriculture itself was also one of the primary foundations of the Industrial Revolution. Without radical increase in the production of both foods and raw materials from within Scotland until the early nineteenth century, the whole process of rapid economic growth might have stalled." @default.
