- W2734530412 abstract "The molecular composition of cometary volatiles is a basic information on the nature of comets and an important clue to their formation mechanisms. Important results were recently obtained on this topic from radio and infrared spectroscopy.Many rotational lines of HCN, H2S, H2CO and CH3OH were observed in comets by radio spectroscopy at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. These techniques are able to probe minor species with abundances of 10−3 or less relative to water.Comets have important emissions in the 3.2–3.6 μm region. Fluorescence emission of large molecules and/or thermal emission of small organic grains were first invoked to explain this feature. We now known, from radio sepctroscopy, that methanol is an abundant cometary constituant (1 to 5% relative to water) and that fluorescence of its vibrational bands accounts for a significant part of this emission. The remaining emission msy be due to other CHO species. Their identification will require the confrontation of high‐resolution cometary spectra with synthetic or experimental spectra of candidate species in cometary conditions (i.e. at cold temperatures)." @default.
