This chapter provides an introduction to X-ray excited electron spectroscopy to interrogate the surface of volatile liquid materials of atmospheric relevance. Along with examples, it is demonstrated how X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provides access to the air–aqueous solution interface in terms of composition, acid–base equilibria, and depth profiles. Electron yield near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy allows probing the local environment of solute and solvent species, e.g., to address questions related to the hydrogen-bonding structure in aqueous solutions, which is demonstrated by examples related to the surface properties of frozen solutions and the quasi-liquid layer on ice." @default.
