- W2904991644 abstract "R. W Sparks and colleagues theorized that combining basic language with musical forms would facilitate cooperation in the brain between the right and left hemisphere. They called this melodic intonation therapy (MIT). MIT is typically utilized with aphasic persons with significant speech deficits. The preserved skills of singing and of recitation of familiar statements/phrases and profanity initially started the research in this area. Basically, MIT is a structured language rehabilitative program for people with expressive aphasia, a language disorder. It is typically employed by speech pathologists or music therapists. As the tasks progress in length, participation of the clinician decreases. Longer delays are imposed by the therapist, before the patient is permitted to respond. In addition, more spontaneous and appropriate verbal speech is anticipated. The original hierarchy of MIT is highly structured, with gradual progression of difficulty. Much discussion has occurred regarding whether it is necessary to follow this highly structured approach or if less structured intervention strategies could work." @default.
