Albumin is a drug that is challenging to manage due to its high cost and controversial use in clinical practice. This study aims to determine, in a university hospital gastroenterology department, the frequency and the economic impact of inappropriate human albumin prescriptions in terms of indication based on consensus. Data collection was carried out for two months using a standardized prescription. Indications, dosages and treatment durations were compared with consensus. Eighty-eight prescriptions were established using 1015 vials of albumin for 45 patients. Forty-one percent of prescriptions, affecting 53% of the patients included, were related to inappropriate indications corresponding to 57% of the vials consumed during the study. The cost of the irrational use of human albumin was 10,519 €/2 months. The practice of inappropriate prescribing of human albumin affects a large proportion of patients, significantly increasing the cost of management. The development of a guide including appropriate indications for human albumin is essential for better quality of care and better cost saving." @default.
