- W3208055284 abstract "Stroke is a representative sterile inflammatory disease; that is, it occurs in the absence of any microorganisms. Cerebral ischemia-related inflammation is a multistep process mediated by various brain and immune cells. Inflammatory responses exaggerate the pathologies of ischemic stroke by promoting neuronal cell death and brain edema. Hyperglycemia is common in the acute stage of stroke, and this condition can promote brain inflammation and worsen ischemic injury after stroke. Several mechanisms have been proposed, but a major proportion of patients have stress hyperglycemia mediated by cortisol and epinephrine. Many experimental and clinical studies have shown that admission hyperglycemia is related to poor functional outcomes. In addition, the patients with hyperglycemia had a higher hemorrhagic risk after thrombolytic therapy. This chapter addresses the mechanisms and factors that cause hyperglycemia in acute stroke patients and how hyperglycemia mediates the inflammatory response and adversely affects the damaged brain tissue. Together, the difficulties and importance of glucose control in clinical practice will be discussed." @default.
