- W364357 abstract "This article describes how pedestrian detection forms the heart of the Puffin pedestrian control strategy that is now mandated by the Department of Transport (DfT). When fully functional the detection enables Puffin pedestrian crossings to provide real benefits over the older Pelican pedestrian strategy. These benefits are focused on two main areas: (1) optimized pedestrian crossing times; and (2) minimization of unnecessary vehicle stops. Since the introduction of Puffin crossings a variety of technical solutions have been used to provide the necessary detection functionality, including video, radar and occasionally pressure sensitive mats installed in the pavement. Typically the on-crossing detector functionality is delivered using Doppler radar technology, which on the whole performs reasonably well and is relatively inexpensive. However, for curbside applications, where video detection predominates, the performance of some existing solutions has not been good. However, despite extensive development work it ultimately proved impossible to deliver reliable curbside and on-crossing solutions using radar at this frequency, with the curbside being the most difficult application to solve. Two key problems were encountered: (1) susceptibility to rain; and (2) curbside detection zone. Rain offers two key challenges to radar detection. First, where the radar energy is absorbed by the rain, which acts to reduce the effective range of any given radar solution. Second, backscatter, where raindrops reflect the radar energy, which gives rise to false detection events. Typically simple radar detectors provide a detection zone that is roughly oval in shape. While this is good for general vehicle detectors it does not match well with the zone shapes needed for curbside applications." @default.
