- W4230558459 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter presents a number of industrially significant compounds encompassing a spectrum of structural categories that have been reported to be carcinogenic and/or mutagenic. It also determines whether there are structural and biological similarities amongst these agents, which would better permit a measure of predictability and prioritization in both the screening of new or untested compounds and the determination of which of the existing potential chemical carcinogens to investigate in long-term bioassays. The possible modifying factors of carcinogenesis and mutagenesis are highlighted. The chapter also assesses the various aspects of risk assessment to bring into better perspective the utility of potential chemical carcinogens and/or mutagens versus the possible societal risk in their continued employment. A program aimed at identifying and eliminating exposure to potential carcinogens and/or mutagens requires the development of rapid, inexpensive screening methods to augment long-term animal tests (for potential carcinogens) to focus on the hazardous chemicals among the many thousands to which humans are exposed." @default.
