- W4235224964 abstract "This chapter discusses the phenomenon of interlinked political, social, and economic crises, focusing on market-based societies characterized by a more or less well-developed constitutional state, a corresponding territorial jurisdiction, and a more or less commercialized free public sphere. This type of society goes back to the American and French Revolutions at the end of the eighteenth century and became widely adopted via further upheavals on the threshold to the modern age in the 1840s in three thrusts, after the First and Second World Wars and at the end of the Cold War. These societies share a characteristic orientation to progress and growth. The combination of democratic participation and market economics depends on continuous growth from which everyone must benefit for reasons of legitimacy – if not the present generation, then at least the next one. In times of discontinuous growth crises, however, this expectation is thwarted, which repeatedly opens up to debate the relationship between markets and democracy as well as crisis-control measures by nation states and transnational dependencies. In order to discuss these crises, which are characterized by deep conflicts and an uncertain future, we must first of all outline the social order of this type of society and how this social order depends on confidence, which itself is tied up with reputation. This article looks at that according to the rise and fall of reputation of relevant persons, organizations, and institutions in the public sphere. Accordingly, the first part of this article discusses the role of reputation in the social order of modern societies, while the second part considers their disintegration, that is to say, the interlinked political, social, and economic crises. Finally, in the third part of this contribution, we also have to consider the structural change of the public sphere, especially its effects on the allocation of reputation." @default.
