- W4248924498 abstract "Abstract The Color of Our Shame: Race and Justice in Our Time asks a basic yet urgent question: How can we explain systemic racial inequality in an era of formal equality under liberal democratic norms? It argues that contemporary racial inequality is a problem of social value wherein blacks are not accorded the same moral status as their white counterparts. This has implications both for their ability to conceive and pursue a good life of their own choosing, as well as the prospects for their white counterparts to view them as equal beneficiaries of the goods and rights secured by the society in which they participate and to which they contribute. Contemporary racial inequality is a cause for shame because our current liberal democratic norms indicate wide agreement that racism is wrong, yet we fail to be racially egalitarian despite the principles we tend to affirm. This indicates that America's institutions and citizens possess bad character with respect to race. Thus, The Color of Our Shame's second aim: to offer a response to racial inequality as the problem of social value as a function of bad character. The book specifies a perfectionist account of social justice that aims to redeem the nation's bad character and elevate the moral excellence of America's institutions and citizens with respect to race on account of the very principles our democracy purports to affirm, thus seeks to align persons’ and institutions’ democratic principles with morally appropriate racial practices." @default.
