- W4285134477 abstract "Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), and Mycobacterium leprae are subgroups of Mycobacterium genus. The NTM species are gaining attention due to an increasing number of strains responsible for treatment-resistant diseases, demanding urgent attention with respect to diagnosis and drug discovery. Many of the conventional drugs against Mtb are not effective against NTMs. Hence, an unconventional drug space needs to be explored. Given the unique profile of lipids in mycobacteria, lipid biosynthetic pathways offer one such promising possibility. More specifically, NTM-specific lipids, such as glycopeptidolipids, may act as potential targets for discovery of novel inhibitors. In this chapter, the drug target space for emerging NTM pathogens is assessed with respect to their homologs in Mtb which are targeted by inhibitors in various stages of discovery and development. Despite the challenges, the drug target and inhibitor space must be expanded to address the increasing scourge of drug-resistant mycobacterial infections." @default.
