- W4297682714 abstract "Microbial enzymes are a focal point for industries globally due to their high specificity, high catalytic activity, eco-friendly nature, and reusability after immobilization. The global market for industrial enzymes is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.7% between 2016 and 2021, accounting for approximately $5.0 billion in 2016 to $6.3 billion in 2021. Presently, industries use a repertoire of microbial enzymes, and production and characterization of these enzymes have been extensively studied. These enzymes are an alternative to conventional methods which are time consuming, create environmental pollution, and are resource-intensive. Many industrial processes can be replaced with relevant enzymes. Some of the important microbial enzymes used in diverse industries are pectinases, cellulases, xylanases, and amylases. In the present study, a few selected industries, namely textile, paper and pulp, and food processing, which use various physical and chemical methods, are studied. These physical and checmical methods are being replaced by enzymatic methods, which enhance quality and reduce the problem of pollution at different stages of processing. Several microbial enzymes have revealed great potential in the retting of fibers, fruit juice clarification, and processing of products in the pulp and paper industry. Biobleaching, biopulping, biodegumming, and bioscouring are some of the processes used in these industries that are entirely replaced by several microbial enzymes. Several innovations in enzyme technology like directed evolution, metagenomics, and nanotechnology have substantially improved the efficiency of microbial enzymes exclusively used in different industries. The present chapter highlights the problems of conventional methods used in selected industries and emphasizes the use of microbial enzymes as an alternative green technological approach." @default.
