- W4317437785 abstract "The global environmental nuisance from increasing fossil-based plastics waste is a dominant problem in markets worldwide and a menace to the ecosystem. The research fraternity has heeded the call to accelerate the development of biomaterials that can replace prevailing conventional plastics while allowing for efficient and effective management. “Biodegradable plastics” can theoretically eradicate the environmental predicament and curtail the plastic life cycle. In the natural environment, however, numerous factors are obstreperous, and the extent to which these bioplastics can palliate pollution must be authenticated. Considerable prudence must be taken when defining biodegradable plastics, owing to the broad and intricate chemical and physical conditions encountered in the ecosystem. Current monitoring and assessment methods are inadequate to prognosticate bioplastic degradability within the natural environment. Furthermore, the prevailing biodegradation test procedures do not decipher adverse ecological implications or toxicity tests for microbioplastics that may be generated during crushing. In this precursor chapter, a robust overview sheds light on the standards, knowledge gaps, and implications of bioplastics within the natural environment by analyzing whether they are the sole approach to resolving the challenges of augmenting plastic waste management." @default.
