- W4354660 abstract "This chapter highlights the criticism of Plato's philosophy and its influence on England. Plato held that generalizations or Ideal Forms of Ideas were the reality behind the individual material appearances of phenomena. These were permanent and unchanging, and existed in Heaven. All material examples were imperfect copies of the Ideal. Any change, in Plato's view, was likely to be a change for the worse, one further remove from a thing's original perfection. A corollary to this was that theory was superior to practice. Whitehead calls this “the static fallacy,” and it has infected all subsequent philosophy. Against this, Whitehead claims that “the foundations of all understanding of sociological theory—that is to say, of all understanding of human life—is that no static maintenance of perfection is possible.” The axiom is rooted in the nature of things. Advance and Decadence are the only choices offered to mankind. This is explicitly denied by the learned tradition. This dualism between the material and the spiritual world has especially affected England." @default.
