Quantification of neurotransmitters is particularly difficult due to their very low concentrations in biological matrices and co-existence with many other biochemical molecules. Hence, accurate and selective detection and monitoring of neurotransmitters and their metabolites still remain a challenge and become the primary subject of ongoing research. One of the most commonly used analytical technique for this purpose is liquid chromatography (LC). This chapter is focused on advanced hyphenated LC techniques, including coupling LC with tandem and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography, electrospray detection, and microchip methods. These approaches improve the efficiency of bioanalytical and metabolomic analysis of neurotransmitters enabling simultaneous, high-throughput, and sensitive detection. We review the potential applications, detailed characteristics, and advantages of these methods indicating their future perspectives." @default.
