- W4386776386 abstract "Movies are a shared cultural experience that have commonly depicted infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics. While films are usually seen as reflecting contemporaneous hopes, fears, and aspirations, Tom Gunning reminds us that it is not that social trauma triggers the production of certain types of films, but that we come to better understand trauma using films, whether contemporaneous or not. This insight was witnessed as COVID-19 rapidly spread throughout the world, causing most people to lockdown in their homes. During the pandemic, the scale of which had not been seen in over one-hundred years, many chose to escape to the comfort of their television screens. To the surprise of many, though, movies featuring pandemics, some of them decades old, including The Andromeda Strain (1971), 12 Monkeys (1995), Outbreak (1995), and Contagion (2011) rocketed to newfound popularity on streaming services such as Amazon Prime and iTunes. Some were left bewildered by this pattern, others were fearful that watching such films could enhance already high levels of anxiety (between April and May 2020, psychologists Jean Twenge and Thomas Joiner found that Americans were three times more likely to screen for an anxiety disorder), however, the consumption of fictional pandemics served both sociological and psychological ends. The aim here is to marshal evidence from the social sciences to demonstrate that ‘panic watching’ fictional pandemics better enabled people to accept the social gravitas of the pandemic. In short, the films supplied watchers with a cognitive playground from which to roadmap worst-case scenarios happening outside their living room without leaving it; a safe place to watch end-of-the-world scenarios that (comfortingly) did not end the world. From there, the chapter will document how specific films equipped viewers with hopes and lessons on how to handle the COVID-19 pandemic." @default.
