- W60366212 abstract "In this paper, we present some observational evidence showing the presence of a low-frequency oscillation in tropical convection that may be related to the 40–50-day tropical wind oscillation revealed by earlier studies (e.g. Madden and Julian, 1972). We suggest that this oscillation is closely related to a bimodal climate state exhibited by the tropical ocean-atmosphere system, with the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) occurring as an amplification of one of these climatic modes through large scale air-sea interaction. To illustrate the stochastic nature of this interaction, a simple model of a randomly forced nonlinear oscillator is constructed. We find that there is a remarkable resemblance between the long-term temporal variability of the model output and that of the Southern Oscillation. This resemblance suggests that the episodic occurrence of ENSO may be a manifestation of an instability in the tropical ocean—atmosphere system triggered by stochastic forcing and modulated by the deterministic component (i.e. the seasonal cycle) of the coupled system." @default.
