All duplex coatings show better mechanical properties than their single-layered counterparts and increase the durability of tools and dies considerably. Nitriding improves considerably adhesion of the PVD coating to the substrate. A combination of nitriding (gas or plasma nitriding) and PVD processes is found to be very attractive methods of duplex treatment, not only for increasing the load carrying capacity, but also for improving fatigue strength, temperature and chemical resistance as well as the tribological behavior of steel surfaces, particularly under high loads. Duplex coatings have been used successfully in high speed steel cutting tools and precision dies and show their great potential for commercialization after research in recent ten years." @default.
