- W82487947 abstract "Femtosecond lasers exhibit excellent capability in performing three-dimensional processing in transparent materials, especially glass, which makes them a powerful tool for micromachining optical fibers. Optical fiber is typically made of silica glass and functions as a waveguide, which is small in dimension; only slightly larger than that of a human hair. Thus, micromachining of optical fibers is difficult to achieve via conventional manufacturing methods. An efficient method to overcome the above-mentioned difficulty is to use a femtosecond laser. In recent years, femtosecond laser micromachining techniques have been used in a broad range of optical fiber applications; from fiber grating inscription to interferometer fabrication and recently for optical fiber microstructure creation. This chapter describes the experimental parameters involved in femtosecond laser micromachining of optical fibers and their applications in fabrication of optical fiber microstructures and sensing devices." @default.
