- Q110164631 P7081 "Mrs. Margaret Neilson, 22, was alive today because an airplane pilot struck her over the head with a fire extinguisher after she attempted to leap to her death from the airplane, police reported. Pilot Sam Rifkin told police the young woman engaged his plane after specifying she desired to ride in a single-passenger open cockpit ship. With his passenger strapped to her seat ahead of him, Rifkin took off from Mines Field and circled for altitude, to a height of about 1500 feet. He said he saw Mrs. Neilson loosen her life belt, remove her air helmet, and start to arise from the seat. Sensing her intention, Rifkin seized his fire extinguisher and struck her a blow on the head, stunning her. As the ship neared the ground, Rifkin said, Mrs. Neilson recovered from the blow of the extinguisher and made another attempt at arising to her feet, but Rifkin pushed her back and made his landing. Mrs. Neilson was taken to the home of friends where he is recovering." @default.

- Q111654090 P7081 "The action of Adelheid Lowe to set aside deeds by which she conveyed to Ira Lowe, on the eve of her marriage to him in August, 1894, a half interest in two houses, has been dismissed without costs by Justice Pryor of the Supreme Court. The houses are 1150 Second avenue and 365 Bushwick avenue, Brooklyn, with equities of about $15,000. They came to her from her first husband. She had six living children when she married Lowe, when she met through a marriage broker, and she was about fifteen years the senior of Lowe, she charged that his had made love to two of her daughters, contrary to an agreement to care for all her children, and that she had given the deeds through undue influence. In dismissing the case Justice Pryor said: "Upon the evidence. It is impossible to escape the conclusion that the conveyance sought to be set aside was a voluntary act of the plaintiff, not induced by any fraud or undue influence on the part of the defendant. The real consideration for the conveyance was the defendant's promise to marry the plaintiff, and a he did marry her, and is still her husband, there is no failure of consideration and no possibility of placing the parties in status quo. If it be argued that the abandonment of the plaintiff by the defendant is equivalent to a dissolution of the marriage the answer is that it is not apparent upon the proof, but that she was the cause of the separation."" @default.

- Q111660803 P7081 "A singular case of hypnotism has just come to light in New Jersey. Mrs. Adelheid Lowe, wife of Ira Lowe, says that she was induced by hypnotic influence to convey to her husband a half interest in $24,000 worth of property, and she also thinks that it was some influence of this kind which caused her to marry him. The marriage was brought about by the aid of a marriage broker, who told Lowe that if he wanted a wife, the lady in question was a widow with nine children (the eldest being attractive looking girls), and that she owned property. The wooing prospered, and before the marriage took place an antenuptial agreement was drawn up giving Lowe one-half of the real estate in question. After the marriage Lowe proceeded to pawn everything that could be lifted without a derrick and did other unpleasant things, and in one of his frequent absences Mrs. Lowe came to the conclusion that nothing but hypnotism could explain the folly she had committed. It is only of late that the aid of hypnotism has been suspected in such cases, and perhaps this is partly due to the fact that all sorts of things are likely to be set down as hypnotic when once the theory is admitted, because it is so convenient a theory. ..." @default.

Denials of the misstatements, as made in the Brooklyn "Times" and "Eagle," have been sent to both of those papers in the form of an interview by their regular correspondents, but as yet neither of those papers have seen fit to retract the groundless accusations which they have made or seem willing to permit me through their columns to present my side of the story for the perusal of the public. - Q112108332 P7081 "The complaints about teachers' salaries aired on your "Local Live" program were infuriating. Do citizens believe they can have a good education for their children on the cheap, or is it purely ignorance that leads people to think teachers earn lots of money? The average New Jersey teacher, with 16 years experience, earns $28 an hour, plus benefits, and no vacation pay. A recent NJEA poll shows this average teacher earns $48,800 a year, working 47 hours a week. Take 185 days, do the arithmetic, and you get $28 per hour. At the same rate, an employee in industry, working a 40-hour week for 52 weeks would be earning $58,240 a year, plus benefits, plus vacation. Is it unreasonable to expect a professional worker with 16 years experience to earn a salary on a par with this figure? These are raw numbers that exclude the costs of continuing education. Perhaps in the distant past, it could be said with justification that not too much was required of teachers to do their jobs effectively. Yet, while today everyone is crying for changes in education, it has gone almost unrecognized by a complaining public that changes in society have already had a powerful effect on schools, increasing the demands put on teachers. ... Unless the public can think of a cheap way to prepare children for the 21st century, teachers will have to be paid decent salaries, and it is hoped, with less ill will." @default.

- Q112818992 P7081 ""Sid" Greene Is Dead. In the death of Sidney Joseph Greene, known as "Sid" to many thousands, the Brooklyn Daily Times has lost a valued member of its staff, and the community has lost an interesting and talented individual, whose work was known in hundreds of organizations. Coming to this paper in 1924, after distinguished work on newspapers elsewhere, he quickly earned a reputation for himself for the cleverness with which he sketched the outstanding figures at a banquet or other social occasion. Soon the "Sid" Greene cartoons were famous all over Brooklyn, and the committees in charge of the borough's leading functions began competing for the privilege of having him do the sketches for their affairs. A genial companion, this artist was popular with all his associates and with all the great numbers with whom he came in contact night after night. They will miss him greatly, and in newspaper circles and elsewhere there is sincere regret today over his passing. But his work will live long after him. In scores of clubhouses and in many private homes his sketches are framed and on display. To get the original drawing of a 'Sid" Greene cartoon was a request which came into the editorial office almost daily from the chairman of some dinner or dance committee, and to comply with these requests was about the greatest favor which the Times could confer." @default.
