- W1569265346 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses forensic screening with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MC). The coupling of LC with MS has become common in forensic toxicology. During the past ten years, the number of LC–MS applications in forensic toxicology has increased considerably, and the development and applications of this technique have widely been reviewed. No single technique alone covers all substances relevant in forensic studies, and therefore LC–MS, though adequate, cannot replace all other techniques but will be used together with the recognized methods. The strength of using LC instead of gas chromatography (GC) in combination with MS is the feasibility of analyzing thermolabile, polar, and volatile compounds, without time-consuming extraction and derivatization procedures. In forensic toxicology, however, the extraction of drugs from biological material is a critical step related to the comprehensiveness of the screening. Other issues that may limit the coverage of a screening method include chromatography, ionization, the prescreening strategy, and the sensitivity and reliability of identification. No single technique or instrument is yet available that would cover all chemically different drugs with required selectivity, sensitivity, reliability, and possibility of automation." @default.
