The problem is related to the general issue of multiple scattering displacement being uncorrelated with scattering angle. It is not caused by inaccuracies in the Molière distribution. A distortion arises in the fluence at the boundary, and propagates into the adjacent region with consequences that depend on the particular geometry. For an idealised cylindrical cavity, diameter 2 cm, width 2 mm, exposed face-on to a beam of 1 MeV electrons, the average fluence excess in the cavity is 0.7% when EGS4/PRESTA is run with the refined settings Estep = 1% and Ecut = 10 keV. The issue should be addressed directly, by improving the multiple scattering step scheme, rather than by simply reducing step length." @default.
