- W2000598311 abstract "The surfaces of living leaves are colonized by a wide range of non-parasitic micro-organisms. Bacteria and yeast-like fungi usually out-number hyphomy-cetes, but in the wet tropics algae, lichens and ascomycetes, especially members of the Micropeltaceae, are exceptionally abundant. Foliage microfloras in the temperate zones of the northern and southern hemispheres seem to be similar. Populations of leaf bacteria and yeasts, unlike those in soil, contain high proportions of pigmented forms; relatively few of the bacteria form spores. Many of the bacteria, including pseudomonads, xanthomonads and Flavobacterium spp., and some of the yeasts, occur on seeds. The yeasts represent mainly genera within the Cryptococcaceae and Sporobolomycetaceae; members of the Endomycetaceae which abound on fruits rarely occur on leaves. Numbers of bacteria and yeasts, which sometimes reach 107 cells/cm.2 and 109/g. fresh weight, increase as leaves age but are usually less in winter than summer, excepting Cryptococcus. In New Zealand this yeast is more numerous in the winter than in the summer. Some fungi are mainly restricted to the abaxial leaf surface, e.g. Sclerographium phyllanthicola Deight. on Phyllanthus discoideus, while others occur more commonly on upper surfaces. Members of the Sporobolomycetaceae are often more numerous on leaves invaded by parasitic fungi, nematodes and gall-forming mites than on healthy leaves. More is known of the types than of the functions of the micro-organisms found on leaves. In vitro some, e.g. Beijerinckia, fix atmospheric nitrogen while others secrete root stimulants and antifungal metabolites, but whether these benefit the host in vivo needs to be determined. Little is known by direct experimentation of the nutrition of leaf saprophytes, but there is evidence indicating that plant substances reaching leaf surfaces affect the growth of the fungi." @default.
