• W2003156783 abstract "Abstract A new type of compact pair spectrometer for medium energy photons has been developed for use in studies of nuclear reactions, in particular for the exclusive (p, γ) reaction on light nuclei. It is designed to have a large acceptance, a wide momentum range, a small size, excellent energy and angle resolution, and very efficient background rejection to enable the detection of cross sections of a few nb/sr. These features are realized by using a clamshell-type pole configuration in the magnet, high resolution drift chambers as position detectors, an effective combination of trigger detectors and shielding, and a powerful data analyzing process. The performance of the pair spectrometer has been tested in a study of the 11 B(p, γ) 12 C reaction at 98 MeV. The energy resolution of the pair spectrometer is demonstrated to be about 0.6 MeV (FWHM), and cross sections down to about 1 nb/sr are measured. The energy resolution is expected to remain at 0.6 MeV with increasing photon energy up to about 200 MeV." @default.
