- W2014924277 abstract "The honeycomb barnacle Chamaesipho tasmanica Foster and Anderson occurs in patches on exposed rocky shores, but often forms continuous sheets covering the substratum at mid-shore levels of sheltered shores in south-eastern Australia. Effects of the presence of newly-settled individuals on the later settlement of arriving cyprid larvae of C. tasmanica were examined experimentally from 1990 to 1992. Each year, replicate 2.5 cm diameter patches were cleared within aggregations of barnacles at each of low, mid and upper levels of Chamaesipho's distribution at each of two sites. In some experimental plots, newly-settled barnacles were removed each day during periods of settlement. In other plots, the newly-settled barnacles were counted, but not removed. Surviving barnacles were then counted to determine influences of the presence of previous settlers on the abundance and survival of later arrivals. New settlers and recruits did not influence settlement of cyprid larvae, but, as recruits aged, their presence was associated with more abundant new settlers. The implications of the observed gregarious and non-gregarious behaviour during settlement of C. tasmanica are discussed with respect to the consequences for the distribution of populations following disturbance." @default.
