It considers how they identify with both new and remembered experiences. In programme preferences, viewers critically distance themselves from viewed. Its post‐colonial dialectic (re)plays and displays two perspectives, ‘hermeneutic poststructuralism’ (Wilson) and a ‘politics of subject‐positions’ (Yue). The hermeneutic concept of ‘horizons of understanding’ is made available to discuss viewers’ memories, recognition and anticipation. Television's place in the disruption of familiar experience, of the migrant's ‘life‐world’ can, it is suggested, be described phenomenologically.
