- W2124180819 abstract "I begin by thanking the organisers of this meeting for the invitation to attend it and the opportunity to speak about expanded liquid metals. These systems form only a small species of the large genus of random systems but it is one containing much of interest and of difficulty for both experimenters and theoreticians. In the context of the present meeting the chief point of interest is the metal-nonmetal transition but the behaviour of the systems on the metallic and nonmetallic sides has to be observed and considered before the transition itself will be fully understood. We may as well say at the outset that very little about expanded liquid metals is thoroughly well under stood and it will therefore be one of the main objects of this lecture to iden tify the areas of considerable doubt and of reasonable certainty. It is not long since the present author reviewed this subject and it is inevitable that some steps of the previous review1> will be retraced in order that the present account should not be unsystematic. But there will be dif ferent emphases here and a year is in fact long enough for some valuable new material to have emerged. An expanded liquid metal is a fluid system of which the density has been significantly lowered-say by 10% or more-below its value at the triple point. Such a decrease results from heat and pressure, the first to cause thermal expansion, the second to prevent boiling. A suitable combination of tempera ture (T) and pressure (P) can in principle move the system to supercritical conditions and thence to any desired density (d), however high or low, with out crossing the liquid-vapour phase transition. In some regions of the T-d diagram, the electrical conductivity 6 (d, T) will have metallic values, others not. (See Fig. 1.) Discovering where these regions are is a main aim of the research. Most of the discussion will be about Hg, Cs and K. This is simply" @default.
