• W2143005760 abstract "Data on parity of 11,127 ever married women registered in the provincial cancer registries of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan for the years 1969–1971 have been compared with general population parity data derived from the 1971 census of Canada. An association was demonstrated between parity and increased incidence of digestive-organ cancers taken as a group, but this was not significant when individual sites were considered. A reduced risk in parous women is, however, confirmed for cancers of the corpus uteri, ovary and fallopian tube with other genital organs, and an increased risk for in situ cancer of the cervix. An age differential for risk was suggested for breast cancer with a reduced risk in parous women aged 35 or more but possibly not in younger women, while an increased risk was demonstrated for invasive cancer of the cervix only in parous women aged less than 50. A protective effect of early age at first pregnancy on breast cancer was demonstrated using women with all other cancers as an internal control. An increased risk of early age at first pregnancy was demonstrated for invasive and in situ cancer of the cervix uteri. No effect was, however, seen for other sites. Controlling parity by age at first pregnancy abolished the parity effect for breast and invasive cervix cancer, but an effect of parity persisted for other uterine cancer, ovarian cancer and in situ cancer of the cervix. With nulliparity as the risk factor, the population attributable risk per cent for breast cancer is 1.9% and for cancer of the corpus uteri 5.0%. With parity as the risk factor, the population attributable-risk per cent for digestive-organ cancers considered as a group is 17.7%, and 53% for in situ carcinoma of the cervix." @default.
