- W2332472912 abstract "Although the pathogenesis of acute leukaemia in children is obscure at the present time, considerable knowledge has accumulated from the intensive investigations of the past two decades. It is clear that environmental factors, such as radiation, can induce leukaemia in humans. The role of infection, especially viruses, has been subjected to close scrutiny but is still to be defined. There is some evidence that genetic factors are of improtance. Acute leukaemia in children has responded more favourably to various chemotherapeutic agents than has the disease in adults. acute lymphocytic and undifferentiated cell leukaemias are the morphologic types which have shown the greatest incidence of remission and the longest period of clinical control. A number of compounds are now available which are effective inducers of remission; only some of these are capable of effective remission maintenance. Duration of life in acute leukaemia in children has been considerably extended since the introduction of the first successful chemotherapeutic agent in 1948. The most effective methods of employing existing drugs require further definition. Other approaches to control of the disease, such as immunotherapy and the application of immunologic principles, avenues which have only recently received intensive study, offer further hope for the future." @default.
