- W2501008045 abstract "Nutritional alterations are common in elderly and dysregulation of iron metabolism is an important cause of anemia in aged people. It can be caused by an imbalance between iron needs for erythropoiesis and iron absorption and recycling. Several mechanisms are involved in anemia in the elderly, and iron deficiency is common. A central role is played by hepcidin, the main regulator of iron homeostasis. The main signaling pathways that regulate hepcidin are the BMP-SMAD pathway, controlled by iron levels, the JAK2-STAT3 pathway, regulated by inflammation, and the erythropoietic needs, that inhibit hepcidin through the release of erythroferrone by erythroid tissues. Since many disorders of aging are associated with a mild inflammatory condition, hepcidin increase causes redistribution of iron in macrophages and iron restricted erythropoiesis and anemia. A better control of nutrition and ongoing attempts to manipulate the hepcidin pathway will likely prove of benefit in the elderly in the near future." @default.
