- W2809366908 abstract "Abstract For many inhabitants of developing countries, active transportation remains a necessity and not a choice as is mostly the case in high-income countries. Therefore, findings from research in high-income countries may not necessarily apply to low-income countries. In this chapter, we introduce the physical activity transition model and discuss its implications for active transportation and the health of populations in developing countries. Next, we summarize recent research on the prevalence of children's active transportation in developing countries and review the correlates of children's active transportation based on the socioecological model. We note that the prevalence of active transportation varies markedly within and between countries and that there is consistent evidence of lower rates of active transportation in urban compared to rural areas in developing countries. Children living in poorer families and those who live closer to schools are also consistently more likely to engage in active transportation. We conclude by describing the implications of these findings for policymakers, practitioners and researchers in developing countries." @default.
